Relics of 'Saint-in-waiting' visit Notre Dame Sydney

The relics of the ‘Patron Saint-in-waiting’ of World Youth Day have arrived at St Benedict’s Parish Church on The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Sydney Campus.

The remains of the Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati have been convoyed from Turin, Italy for WYD, and will remain in the Church at Notre Dame’s Broadway site until the 9 July.

From the 15 - 20 July the coffin will be on display in St Mary’s Cathedral.

Blessed Pier Giorgio was a young Italian man who, despite his relatively privileged background, assisted underprivileged people.

He is seen as a special patron of youth because he combines his enjoyment of life and sports with strong faith, serious charity and commitment to social justice. Pier Giorgio died of polio at 24 and was beatified - the stage before sainthood - in 1990.

WYD 2008 coordinator, Bishop Anthony Fisher OP, said the remains were brought to Sydney so pilgrims were made aware of a young man who at 24 had done great things and inspired thousands of people.

Deputy Vice Chancellor and Dean of Philosophy and Theology Sydney, Professor Hayden Ramsay said having Blessed Pier Giorgio’s relics at St Benedict’s would be a great inspiration to the University community.

"Pier Giorgio is especially loved by students, who relate well to him and his passion for faith and justice. It is an honour to have him here,” said Professor Ramsay.
