School of Health Sciences, Fremantle and Broome

The College of Health Sciences is comprised of academic programs that focus on the health and well being of individuals and communities. With the opening of the University’s Sydney campus in 2006 a national College of Health Sciences and its Fremantle School was established. The establishment of a School of Health Sciences in Sydney is on the horizon.

The School of Health Sciences in Fremantle is currently organized into two academic groupings.

The Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences division is lead by Associate Dean Professor Peter Hamer. This division includes the Biomedical Science and Physiotherapy programs. The Health and Physical Education division is headed by Associate Dean Associate Professor Beth Hands. This grouping includes Health and Physical Education, Exercise and Sport Science (undergraduate and postgraduate), Sport and Recreation Management, Preventive Health, and Outdoor Education (postgraduate) programs.

Details on these programs are found via the Courses and Programs page.

The academic programs are supported by the extensive resources in the Roy and Amy Galvin Medical Library and the St Teresa’s Library .

The key aspects of studying Health Science courses at Notre Dame are:

  • Values based curriculum - compulsory study of the core curriculum of Theology, Philosophy and Ethics
  • Practical orientation - by integrating theory and research with practical skills honed in school, clinical or community settings our graduates are industry-ready, and well equipped to face the many challenges that await today's health professionals
  • Student-centred approach - our admissions process involves more than your School grades. We assess the person as a whole, including academic aptitude. Other supporting documents such as a personal statement from the applicant, the resume, references, and awards and the interview provide more in-depth information. Once studying at Notre Dame pastoral care is second to none

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the courses in the College of Health Sciences.

PHENC Project
The PHENC Project brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers who recently received a grant from the Carrick Institute in Higher Education.

The research project is exploring interactive video analysis to develop learning and assessment of university students’ practical and communication skills.  Staff and students are using video cameras and Dartfish, a video analysis software package, in interactive and participative ways for teaching, learning and assessment.  The acronym PHENC, comes from the five schools are participating in the project: Physiotherapy, Health and Physical Education, Education, Nursing and Counselling.

The PHENC Project is currently in progress and you can visit the Project’s evolving website at:
