Welcome to the School of Arts & Sciences

Welcome from the Dean

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the School of Arts and Sciences.  The School has a long tradition of excellence, innovation, and creativity in teaching and research.  As Dean it is my goal to create a climate for learning that stimulates, challenges and energises…. and if the evidence from our graduates and current students is anything to go by we succeed in that goal.

The School of Arts and Sciences has a strong commitment to the University values of community service, social justice and reconciliation.  To find out more follow the links to our ‘experience the world’ program.

As a student of Notre Dame in the School of Arts and Sciences don’t be surprised to find yourself studying the history of New York City , in New York City.  Or… you may find yourself working alongside Aboriginal people in the Kimberley for a month making a positive difference to their lives in authentic partnership, or in Uganda studying Caritas programs for the rehabilitation of child soldiers or sustainable agricultural practices.

Learning at University is not just about academic outcomes, as important as they are.  It is about the development of the whole person.  We pride ourselves on graduating excellent scholars, but more than that we take enormous pride in the quality of the people graduating from Notre Dame: excellent scholars and excellent people who are equipped to make a positive difference in an increasingly complex world. As a noted anthropologist once observed “I am often asked whether people can make a difference… to which I reply; it is only people that can make a difference”.  At the School of Arts and Sciences you will become one of those people.

So again… welcome.  Please feel free to drop by and say hello.

PS. I forgot one of the most important things about being at University… Have fun!
